I can't believe how fast this year has passed. I wanted to take this time to thank everyone for their business and how great it has been emailing and meeting my new friends. I've added several new country's that I've shipped to and really great people there. This year I've built about 78 custom rods and I don't have any idea how many blanks I've sold. I've got a lot to be thankful for. I've been blessed with 4 beautiful, smart and loving girls. My 3 daughters and my wife make my world go round!! I thank God everyday for them. Thank you all and I hope God blesses you all as much as he blesses me!!

I'm back!!

Sorry to be away so long. I wanted to have a great size for the Taneycomo night scene. So Starting Right now!!!! I have a 9' 4pc 6wt for sale!!! It's perfect size for the monsters that swim around at night on Taney! They will be the same costs as the 5wts both in the blank and the Custom Rod. It's been a really great year so far for blank sales and for Custom rod sales. Thank you all!!! I'm enjoying some slow time right now with only 5 rods to build. I'm trying to spend as much time as I can with my ladies. Time well spent. I hope everyone has had a great year so far. I pray that the gas prices go down so we can get out and do something. Thank you Lord! The 7'6" 1wts are really hitting the trail in built rods and blanks! These blanks are really sweet. They cast like a dream! I've been shipping rods left and right. I'm still pondering the reel sales. The reel that I like has 6 ball bearings and will spin forever smooth! I'm wondering if I should offer a extra spool? I haven't been fishing in months but snow and cold have been ugly! We have had 13 inches and are expecting 4 more on top. It's suppose to be in the fiftys next week. Heat wave!!!! The sales have been really great!! I've been shipping to all over the world already! Brazil, Singapore, UK, France, Italy and to Denmark!!! And a few to the states!! The blanks are moving also! Thank you Lord!! I've been really blessed! I've been looking to try and add a reel to my line up also. I've been looking and it's a rough road to find just what I want. I'm kinda picky and I hope it shows in my rods and blanks! I've got 6 rods to wrap right now. I haven't even been able to go fishing yet this year. I'll make time soon I hope. We've been fighting sickness at home for a while. We're doing better now.

I'm needing feedback on the reels. I want to know what everyone wants in a reel and can't find. One thing I want is a silent reel. No clicking no drag sound!! Let me know at mark@rdpflyrods.com

Hunting and Fishing

It's been a great weekend already. I got to go with a bunch of guys from work up to central Missouri for some outdoor fun. We got drawn for the HaHa Tonka special hunt. I wasn't going to hunt but I still wanted to get out with the guys and enjoy their company. We were successful. Had a blast with them. We went squirrel hunting on Friday. I was the only one to get any. Got three and lost one in a old snag. They got up Sat morning to go hunting and I got up and went trout fishing a Bennett Springs. The river was in great shape and the fish were plentiful. Met Marshall and Mike there. It was great to see them. Met another rod builder from Nixa. Really nice guy and his friends also. The weather was cold but we were bound and determined to fish. It really wasn't that bad but it did start getting colder!! A lot colder!! We had a great time fishing and catching!! I decided to leave about 10:30 and head to the house and see my girls. I was really missing them!! It's great to get away but there is no place like home!!!!!! Oh yea!! We stayed in a really nice place on Niangua River called Niangua Campground. Really a great place to go. The cabins were really nice for a bunch of guys. Price was right also!! I've got rods to build and girls to hug so we'll see you later. Tight lines!!!

November update!!! Great!!

Sorry it's been so long but here it goes. I've been really busy! REALLY BUSY!!! The blanks are moving and the rods are moving even faster!! I sent a bunch of blanks to So Toyota in Japan and blanks to France and Italy and Argentina and Rods to England and Australia and soon to Brazil and a bunch in the US. I'm very blessed!! I did get to go to Roaring River on opening day of Catch and Release and caught a bunch of fish. The big boys were no where to be found. Today the 26th. Marshall and I went down to RR even tho it was 24 when I left the house this morning. Luckly the wind wasn't blowing and the cold didn't cut to bad. The killer worm was really doing great. I had a tip about another fly that my buddy Larry told me about and decited to give it a run and WOW!! I caught a fish on the first 5 casts!!! The 6th cast was a little to long in the back cast and I had to tie on again. I caught about 25 fish in a hour. Sorry I promased that I wouldn't tell what he had told me. I did get a picture of a grandpa that caught a nice 8lb fish. I'll try and add a picture.

I'm still building like crazy and loving every minute of it!!! I've decided to start my own line of blanks!! I've been working with a group that does really great designs and one of the guys was a former designer for St Croix. The blanks will have the Tiger Eye finish and will be the full flex IM6 graphite with a little sweetner added in. The sweetner is a small amount of boron. The boron will add another step in touch! You will be able to feel the fish think about biting your fly. You'll have to learn to wait before setting the hook so the fish has the fly in his mouth first. "sounded good didn't it" Now for more good news. I'm adding a 7'6" 4pc 1wt!! I'll also have a 2wt and a 3wt and a 4wt in the 7'6". I'll have a 6' and a 6'6" and a 7' 2wt in the 4pc also. I'm going to have 3wt, 4wt and 5wt in the 9' rods also. I really want to be a leader in the smaller rod market. I'll still be building the custom rods. I'll have to up my prices a little to cover the new blanks but $15.00 will not be bad. The blanks will run between $55 and $65 and you will get your moneys worth. It will be later in the year before we see them. I'm very excited to do this step. I hope you will be also. Just think! A 1wt that you can afford!! I'll keep you posted!! I had a blast!! I meet Marshall at 7 am at the lodge and we went up to zone 1 to start. We didn't make the whistle because we were talking so much. It didn't matter. I got rigged up first and out in the river I went. It was a cool morning and a little mist was going. The first fish was a nice one. A fat 2 1/2lb rainbow. Fought really great!! Nice start to the day! I was using the killer worm and it didn't let me down! I caught fish everywhere I went! Went below the bridge in the rapids and caught about 10 fish really quick. About 11 we decided to go play some golf! I hadn't played in about 2 years. I hit the ball pretty good for the most part. Of course Marshall always hits it good! I had a birdy and finished up 5 over for 9 holes. I was proud! Marshall played much better. Lunk! It was really great to get to spend most of the day with him. I then headed home. I got home in time to go with Michelle to pick up the girls at school. We went over to Hog Wild and had dinner! It was a man's day to remember!! I went to bed early! I was one tired boy!!

I shipped a rod to Brazil a couple weeks ago. He got it and loved it! I shipped one the same day to Canada and it's still in customs. I don't get the customs deal! Had a lot of inquiries and a few sales. Kinda slow for the most part. I've been thinking about having my own line of blanks made. I've been talking with people all over the world trying to find someone that will do the best job with what I want. I'm leaning toward and manufacture here in the states. I would rather have every thing built in America. That's very important to me. I'll keep you updated!!
Get your kids out fishing!! It will be the hardest day of work for the biggest reward! It's March and spring is springing a little. I've been selling a lot of rods in the last couple weeks. I sold one to a guy in Brazil last week!! I've covered about every Continent now.
I'm getting ready to go fishing on my birthday this Wednesday up at Bennett Springs with my buddy Marshall Robb! I'm so excited I can hardly wait. We are going to meet there and fish in the morning and then maybe go play golf in the afternoon!!! SWEET!!! I haven't played golf in two years. I hope my swing hasn't left like my diet!!
I've been thinking real serious lately about expanding my business. Getting my own blanks and selling blanks and reels and complete kits. I'm thinking and sending out inquiries to see what it's going to take. I really think it would do well now because my rod building is doing very well and I think people will trust me. I'll keep you informed. I'll also tell you how the 17th goes!!! It was cold when I got there but I was hot for the water!! The river was up a little and had a small amount of stain to it. I looked around for some lunkers for a little bit and could only find one and when I cast anywhere around him you would have thought that I was throwing a stick of dynamite in the water. Gone in a flash!!!!!!! I then decided to catch some fish. I started with old faithful "The Killer Worm" Well it sounds dramatic anyway!! I started fishing about noon and fished till about 3:00 and had a ball! I caught about 30 fish in all. I walked a lot and covered most of the river just to see where the fish were. They have done some work on the pools and I don't see what they are trying to do but what ever. The rod sales are steady and I even got a guy from Malaysia that is wanting a rod! I've been getting a lot of return customers lately and that really makes me feel good about the way I build the rods. I did meet a nice guy from Aurora today that I had talked to before and told him about the Killer Worm. Hope everyone is keeping their line wet!! I've been very busy with my family and rod building. The rods have been really selling well. I've been selling a lot in the UK and sold one to a nice guy in Sweden. I did get to go down to Roaring River and do some fishing and meet up with the Sobers. Used the Killer Worm and had a lot of fun. Got to spend some time talking with Ron and John and Michael. Good people! The river had a lot of water in it and was a little stain to it. The number of fish in the river was down but still not bad. I'm heading down with the family this month for a weekend and really looking forward to it. My brothers brother in law caught a nice 4lb+ fish last weekend. He caught it on a ultra light rod. Boo! I made him a fly rod?? I'll try and keep my blog updated better. But when there's rods to build I'm building!! Gary Harrison met me in the parking lot to get his new rod. Enjoyed meeting Gary and getting to know him. Very nice guy.
I hit the water about 9:00 and 0 units!!! First time I've been able to fish the river in day light. It's changed some but still the best place around to fish!! Started with a egg pattern. Nothing! The next 4 tie ons Nothing! The Killer worm was next! First cast "HELLO" nice 17" fish and the Dam horn starts blowing!!!! Many nasty four letter words ran threw my mind and none of them "fish". Then the horn blows again!! 2 units! Just when I figure out what they want!!! The water started coming up and a third horn blows!!!!!!! Everyone started for the north bank. A weard thing happend!! The water started dropping and went back down to normal???? I didn't care what was going on I wanted to fish and I did! Caught fish everywhere I went. Had a ball!!! Caught about 15 fish in a hour and a half! The river was wonderful to feel again on my waders. I talked to 4 or 5 very nice people. I'm going to have to take a morning off and head down sometime soon!!!

The rods have been selling very well as of late. Well it was Friday the 13th and the corp was running water when they said they wouldn't be!!! So it was off to the Landing for some grub!! Famious Dave's was on my mind!!! GREAT LUNCH!!! After we were done we were walking out and I called the Dam. Zero units!!!!! We were off and running. I dropped Michelle off at Tanger and I was speeding to the dam. I haven't seen the river behind the dam for a long time! It has changed a lot. The whole thing seems shallower. I tied on a scud and caught a few fish and then changed to the Killer Worm! I was able to do some site fishing and did manage to catch about 15 fish. I lost two nice ones. Just didn't get the hook in them. The horns started blowing at 4:45 and here the water came! Time to leave and get my sweetheart and head home. All in all I had a great day! Good company, Good food and trout fishing!!! It doesn't get much better than that!!! Rods are still selling good! Get your order in!!

Wed trip to Roaring River

I had to run down to Tims on Wed to pick up a reel so I spent a couple hours on the River. I was very suprised to see how empty the river was of trout. It was just 4 day sence opening day and there wasn't hardly any trout in the river. I fished down below in the fly area and did manage to catch about 15 fish in a couple hours and enjoyed the catching as well as the weather. Man was it nice!!! My tag number was 2826. They said they turned loose 7200 fish and there had to be at least 3000 fish from Catch and Release season so there's a lot of fish missing some where!! It was nice to go fishing for a while and I enjoyed my company also. Michelle read a book and I think napped some also! We had a great outing!! I'm about to get caught up on my rod building. I've built 13 in the last 2 weeks!! I got down about 1:00. They were running one unit so waiding was really out. I got a place by #2 outlet and gave it a shot. I caught about 15 fish till 3:00. I caught one cutthrout that was about 18inches. Hard fighter and beautiful fish. They fight a ton better on Taney than Roaring River. I'm going to head down to Roaring River on Wed to get a reel from Tim at Tim's Fly shop. Great place to stop and get all the scoop!! I'll report after the trip. I'm going to fish a little. Michelle is going with me maybe I'll get some pictures to post. I'm selling rods like crazy right now. Great start to the year!!!!

Remember you can comment on the blog. Beautiful day!!! The rains have helped the river alot. Nice flow. Fishing was great. Got to meet Josh from Springdale AR. He landed this pretty female. 8 1/2lbs. She was full of eggs. If you look at the picture close you can see she's aborting her eggs. Turned her loose and she did great. There's a lot of nice fish in the river. Looks like some are new to the river. They turned loose a bunch of browns last week sometime. Not big browns but nice fights. I didn't stay very long but did manage to catch a few. It was nice to get out and fish!

Afternoon run 12/19/2008

Well I made a quick run down to Roaring River this afternoon. I got there about 11:30. There were maybe 30 fishermen on the river. I started down in the fly area. The river is running a little lower right now. The fish are doing the scatter moves. You cast around a group of fish and they scatter!!! There were three people down in the fly area. Not a lot of big fish down there. I caught five fish and went up around the lodge. Gary Bates was there. We talked a while. The fish were hungry up there. I started catching a lot of small ones which is still fun. About everywhere I stopped I caught a few fish. I went around by the falls and caught a bunch! I missed a hog big time. He swam right up and bit the Killer worm and I set the hook and nothing!!! Bummer!!! I ended up catching about 30+ fish and had a blast. The weather was nice for this time of year. 40'S and partly sunny. Sold two rods in two days. Pat my bro and Marshall. We had a blast!!!! We findly got tired of counting fish!! That's a great day when you get tired of catching but everyone knows that the catching is icing on the cake!! It was cool early but was not cold. It never changes on the Killer worm catch a ton! I caught 3 about 3lbs and Pat had one nice one and so did Marshall. Talked to Tim a minute and he wasn't kidding about using the big ugly flys!! He tied on a orange and white bouble bunnie and the bigger fish went crazy! This thing was 4 inches long!!!! Roaring River is still one of the prettest rivers anywhere. There were a lot of people fishing and walking around soaking up the beautiful day! Lot's of people asking about fishing regs. Fishing permit and trout stamp is all you need. The Good Lord has blessed us with a lot that we take for granite! Look around sometime and really look what we have and remember he's given this to us!!!!

Well catch and release season finely opened last Friday. I had a great day to start. My first fish was a beautiful 5lb rainbow! I caught about 40fish in 4 hours and 7 of them were between 2lbs and 4lbs. Beautiful day weather wise. I used the Killer worm all day. This Friday I went down after I got off work at 11and got to fish a couple hours. Caught 21fish and had one 3lb and one 4lb fish. Met up with Gary Bates and got to see him land a nice 3lb fish. Last Friday I got to net a sweet 8lb rainbow for a gentalman from Pittsburg KS. He said that he had been fishing RR for 41years and findly caught a 3lb fish last summer. Well you beat that one by a ways!! My brother took my dad down last Monday morning and he said he stopped counting after 30fish. Killer worm is in deed a KILLER!!!! I'm posting a picture of one of the nice rainbows that I caught.

Fishing Bennett Springs

Hey everyone,
It was a great weekend. We went up and started around the spring and the water was a little high but clear. It didn't look like there were too many fish in the river. No matter!!! I was fishing!!!! I fished around the spring for a while and then started my walk about. I ended up below the big bridge in the shallow swift water. I threw the Killer worm at them and they responded. Caught 25 till 10am. Fished it under a palsa about 3 feet and a small shot about 1foot above the Killer!! Went up to came and saw the rest of the Robbs and Watsons. I was ask to talk at the local Rotary lunch this week. I saw a lot of familiar faces and had a good time with them. They had a lot of great questions and I hope I got them the answered good enough.

I talked with a friend from St Louis also this week. He had a great trip to Bennett last week and did pretty well with tough conditions. He did quite well with the killer worm!! I hope to get to go down to Taney and visit with them at the end of the month.

That brings me to Taneycomo. Table Rock opened the gates for a little while and they will continue running 4 units for a while. There has been a good reaction to the blog on OAF about changing the length limit on Taneycomo to 24" for the brown trout. I hope everyone that can vote does. I've contacted the MDC and they are watching the reactions. I've contacted the Branson Chamber of Commerce and waiting on their reply. Wouldn't it be great to see huge Browns swimming around!! It came up 2 feet in a day this week. The fishing has been really good for a couple of weeks for the waders. Here around Mt Vernon got about 4" of rain. It was a nice 4" tho. Didn't come down all at once. We should have a really colorful fall this year with all the rain. Look out for Winter this year. The Almanac says it's going to be a wet one and COLD!! Yuck! I'll keep my waders ready to go at anytime!!!! I've talked to some friends that fished Taneycomo last week and they did very well! They said that there were a few nice Rainbows crusing around and they did notice a couple of pole breaker browns seen. They were tight lipped he said. It looks like it's going to be a great fall on Taney.
